Research Center for Advanced Lignin-based Materials [RCALM] Established

The Research Center for Advanced Lignin-based Materials [RCALM] has been established to promote research and development on advanced wooden materials.

Date of establishment: April 1, 2023
Director: Prof. Takashi Yamashita (Department of Applied Chemistry, School of Engineering)
Location: 9th floor, Katayanagi Advanced Research Institute (Hachioji Campus)

Prof. Yamashita, Director, and his team have recently been conducting a publicly funded project for developing high-added-value materials based on lignin derivatives (modified lignin) produced from the species of cedar that is endemic to Japan. To further promote this technology and return its results to society, thereby contributing to the realization of a carbon-free society, it is necessary to establish a base for comprehensive research encompassing the manufacture, processing, and application of modified lignin materials. With these objectives, we have established the RCALM as a research center focusing on technologies for developing useful high-value-added materials based on wooden resources, attracting international as well as national researchers and firms engaged in this field.
